Night Train FMS

The NIGHT TRAIN FMS incorporates the successful applications of both Finn-Power Flexible Manufacturing Cells and the Finn-Power Automatic Material Management Systems to provide a total solution for unmanned operation in sheet metal fabrication shops. The NIGHT TRAIN automates system control, equipment operation, as well as material flow within the system through a new type of automatic storage for raw material and finished components. Existing fabrication equipment can be integrated into the system to further automate the manufacturing process.

The Material Management System of the NIGHT TRAIN FMS holds all needed blank sheets.  Punched and fabricated parts are automatically stacked on pallets and transferred to the Material Management System via the Night Train Wagon. Automated material handling allows long periods of unmanned operation.

The work process for the basic NIGHT TRAIN includes:

  • The Input and Output station is used to feed raw sheet metal, placed on cassettes, into the Material Management System.  The same station is also used to remove completed parts from the system.

  • Powerlink software indicates what NC programs and cassettes containing raw material are required, and the system manager can edit or change the selected cassette when making the work queue if necessary. The
system manager also has the option of selecting a different stacking address if the need should arise.

  • After the work queue is completed, it is stored in the CNC memory and work begins. NIGHT TRAIN FMS automatically changes material and cassettes and starts the cell. After sheet loading, punching, shearing, sorting, and stacking are performed, the loaded cassettes are returned into the material management system.

  • After the unmanned operation period--e.g., at the beginning of the day shift--manufactured parts are removed via the I/O station.

Multiple FMC equipment in various combinations can be integrated into the Finn-Power Night Train System.

Like all Finn-Power automated cells and systems, the NIGHT TRAIN can be custom engineered and designed to meet specific sheet metal fabrication requirements.

LASER BRILLIANCE® - SPECIFICATION

Following the breakthrough of integrated turret punch press & laser cutting machines, and the rapid development of linear servo drive applications in machine tools, it is only logical that Finn-Power should combine the benefits of both solutions in a single machine tool. Thus another leap in manufacturing speed is now made available in combined punching & laser cutting as it was introduced through Shear Brilliance in integrated right angle shears two years ago.  Laser Brilliance objectives include:

    • Load, punch, laser cut and sort parts in one machine, a completely unmanned operation
  • Begin "nesting" of parts for efficiency and cost control
    • Reduction of production lot sizes (Just In Time)
    • Permit production of parts in "groups" or "families"
    • Eliminate the need to punch the perimeter of the finished part
    • Ability to use all stations and with no interference of dies during forming operations resulting in more optimal programming and nests
  • Eliminate the need for "hard tooling"
  • Improve material flow
    • Reduction of work-in-process inventory
    • Utilization of standard sheet sizes for cost control
    • Load, punch, laser cut and sort the part all in one machine tool
    • Reduce material carts from occupying floor space
  • Reduce cycle time hence lead time for finished parts
    • Just In Time (JIT) and Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)

FINN-POWER's modular approach to flexible manufacturing combines the reliability of established technology with the versatility of custom engineered solutions.

As the applications for turret punch presses developed in terms of sophistication, single-unit manufacturing evolved into automated systems, thus, introducing the concept of flexible manufacturing.

Finn-Power’s Laser Brilliance combines the unique turret punch press with the latest generation of CO2 lasers.  The Triagon CO2 laser up to 3300 Watts is integrated into the Laser Brilliance to allow you to manufacture faster, more economically and using a wider range of sheet material than any alternative solution on the market.

As increasing emphasis is placed on the cost-effectiveness of capital expenditures, Flexible Manufacturing Cell, "FMC" solutions have become the popular choice and fastest growing strategy implemented by major sheet metal manufacturers.  The FMC strategy can technologically and economically satisfy the requirements of an extensive range of manufacturing scenarios -- from cost effective small batch and prototype production through sophisticated production runs.

    FINN-POWER Solution
The combination of a very long X traverse, four clamps and the extremely high positioning speed allowed by linear drives means that more functions – punching, forming, tapping, marking and laser cutting – can be performed flexibly as a single multi-purpose work stage and with a single clamping.

In the Laser Brilliance, the inherent process dwell times, present in most integrated manufacturing solutions has either been eliminated or reduced to the barest minimum.

There is no need for re-clamping and sheet positioning is extremely fast.  A major contributing factor is the fact that many operations are performed simultaneously.

Depending on component geometry, manufacturing time reduction of 30-60% has been recorded in comparison with traditional manufacturing solutions.

    Accuracy
Accuracy is retained at a very high level during laser cutting  due to no need for re-clamping. In addition to speed, linear drives ensure excellent positioning accuracy and consequently, accuracy in each work stage is maintained

    Turret Punch Press
TheLaser Brilliance package is as follows:
    LB-6

    • Turret punch press with 60"  ‘Y’ axis and 250" ‘X’ axis.
    • 3300 Watt CO2 laser with cutting speed up to 787” / minute.
    • LD-3000/1 loader which will load 60" x 120" full size standard sheets.

     LB-8

    • Turret punch press with 60" ‘Y’ axis and 268" ‘X’ axis.
    • 3300 Watt CO2 laser with cutting speed up to 787” / minute.
    • LD-4200/1 loader which will load 60" x 165" full size standard sheets.

    Main Press Frame
The press has a closed "O" frame that is sometimes referred to as a "bridge frame".  Because of the matched turret plates and the "O" frame design the punch and die alignment is exceptional, resulting in much longer tool life.

The frame is a weldment box type design that is annealed and then machined to the highest standards.

The advantages to the FINN-POWER frame design are the one piece construction "O" frame design eliminating flexing and yawing of the frame during punching and no angular deflection between the punch and the die as experienced with other “C” or “J” frame designs.

Finn-Power’s closed “O” frame design eliminates flexing and yawing

The bottom line of this frame design is longer tool life, better hole quality and more accurate parts produced.

    Turret Tool Carrier
The tool carrier is the heart of FINN-POWER's flexibility and simplicity.  Automatic tool changing is accomplished by a bi-directional rotating turret.  The dies in the FINN-POWER turret are supported during the punching cycle by our die support anvil that directs the punching force into the frame of the machine not into the turret.

To ensure proper alignment, the upper and lower turret plates are machined together

TheFINN-POWER turret is equipped with a large hub design, it is gear driven with 1-1/2" diameter turret locking pins.  This assures non-movement in any plane during the punching cycle.

Die support anvil directs punching force into lower frame, not turret plates, preventing turret flexing or wear

The flexible design of the FINN-POWER turret allows the customer to select a variety of different tool station sizes and style that best fit their needs. Specific tool holders are not machined into the turret like other  designs. FINN-POWER incorporates an individual tool holder concept that allows the customer to design his own turret layout.

Gear driven turret with 1-1/2” shot pins

Tool holders may be changed from station to station, creating a custom turret configuration. FINN-POWER offers the only flexible selection of tool holders in the industry.  Any tooling style from either Mate Precision Tooling or Wilson Tool International can be installed in a FINN-POWER turret.

Up to fifteen (15) auto-index, forming  and Multi-tool holders may be placed into the FINN-POWER turret.

"Auto-Index"- Automatic Rotation of Punch and Die
The FINN-POWER approach to auto-index is completely different than that of any other Finn-Power products.  The new system precisely rotates the punch and die in their tool holders using a synchronized index system. Rotation in .001 degree programmable increments gives the machine the ability to rotate infinitely beyond 360 degrees, thus allowing the system to automatically select the shortest path to rotate to a programmed angle input into the NC programs with simplicity, speed and reliability.

    Auto index holder engaged

The auto-index system is built rigidly into the upper and lower frame of the press and engages the auto-index tool holders for tool rotation.  This system allows you to add or change the index stations or Multi-Tool stations at anytime.  FINN-POWER can accommodate a maximum of fifteen (15) auto-index and Multi-tool holder combinations.

    Auto index holder disengaged

This exclusive FINN-POWER auto-index design allows full tonnage work at maximum material thickness with all auto-index stations.

    Upward Forming System

FINN-POWER turret punch presses are now available with the optional upward forming system, which allows 250kN force (27.5 US tons) throughout the punch stroke in an upward movement in the turret which provide maximum flexibility in achieving various forming options.

Unlike conventional forming operations in other machines, the FINN-POWER upward forming solution provides the capability of the die to never rest higher than the table level when the sheet is being moved, thus eliminating machine downtime due to sheet crashing.  The even positioning of the die also provide greater limits in forming height (up to .63" or 16mm in total height) and prevents free sheet movement and scratches on the lower sheet surface (this is of particular importance with coated materials or materials where cosmetics is critical).  Lastly this feature allows you to optimize your programming of the nest. There is no need to perform the nesting with the form operation to be near the last operation.  You now can form anytime in the operation with no concern for scratching or interference.  This provides better nest times for production.

The forming cylinder is installed in the lower frame under the turret.  The form is made by lifting up the die holder and the die. Existing form tools can be utilized with this method.

    Forming Station
Up to ten (10) forming stations can be mounted into the FINN-POWER turret.  Sizes of B (1-1/4"), C (2") and D (3-1/2") are available in the forming stations.

By means of an adapter, standard punching dies can be utilized in the forming station.

    Multi-Tool Station
The Multi-Tool station is a registered trademark of FINN-POWER.  There are many different sizes of Multi-Tools available from FINN-POWER, the Wilson MT-6-A, the Mate MT-6-AU, MT-8/24, MT-10/16 and MT-24/8.  The tools in the Multi-Tool station are changed via the use of the auto-index system.

Multi-tool shown in station 15 increases the tool capacity of the turret

The MT-6-A and MT-6-AU can hold six (6) tools of ½" (12.7mm) in size.  The MT-8/24 will accommodate eight (8) tools up to 24mm or .945" in the "D" dimension.

With the MT-10/16, ten tools up to 16mm or .63" can be installed.  The MT-24/8 can accommodate tools that are 8mm or .315".  All Multi-Tool stations will accommodate tooling that is either shaped or round.

With the Multi-Tool system tool change time within the station is virtually eliminated.  Using "perf" type punches, the Multi-Tool is truly a revolutionary time and cost saving device which increases the number of tools within the turret without sacrificing the flexibility that the FINN-POWER turret's offer.

Also available is a 40 station alpha/numeric Multi-tool part identification tool.  With this Multi-tool station part identification programs are fast and easily done.

Coordinate Table and X-Slide By Linear Technology
The coordinate table moves the workpiece in the X and Y directions by linear drives and controlled by the CNC.

Coordinate table moves the sheet in X and Y directions

    ASD Active Synchronized Drive
The Active Synchronized Drive principle ensures minimum deflection of coordinate table even when a heavy sheet is being positioned at optimum acceleration/deceleration values.

    Programmable Hydraulics
FINN-POWER has manufactured hydraulic high speed punch presses since 1983 and has during these years gathered a wealth of experience on hydraulic systems. FINN-POWER is the true pioneer in hydraulic high speed punching system; a pioneer that all other punch press manufacturers now try to follow.

This technically advanced system offers very fast punching and nibbling rates at low noise levels.

The FINN-POWER is a 100% hydraulic machine.  FINN-POWER's safe, hydraulic system offers complete automatic overload protection eliminating the need for “break-through” plates or “shear pins” to be replaced when punching loads are attempted which exceed the capacity of the rated machine tonnage.

Achieve greatest flexibility with speed and control in punching with Finn-Power’s programmable hydraulics

With this hydraulic turret punch, full tonnage throughout the stroke is always  available which means greater capacities in material thickness and hole size.  This system eliminates the need for large volumes of air and frequent mechanical adjustments required in conventional mechanical clutch and brake systems.

FINN-POWER’s hydraulic system system offers nine (9) different CNC programmable ram punching speeds which can be changed at any point in the part program allowing  full control over position of the sheet at anytime.

Air cooled self-contained hydraulic unit provides clean, safe operations

The hydraulic system also senses if a punch has become stuck in a sheet and automatically the machine stops and displays an alarm on the touch screen indicating that  “punch stuck in sheet.”

FINN-POWER offers the “F3" hydraulic package in our Laser Brilliance punching cell.  The "F3" hydraulic has nibbling hit rates at 1000 hits per minute and 500 hits per minute on one inch centers.

    Electronic Adjustment of Punch Stroke
Electronically adjustable high speed hydraulic punching stroke depth for each tool in the turret and programmable retraction height are standard features with FINN-POWER machines.

With the FINN-POWER there is total "electronic shimming" of the punch. This feature allows much greater control of tool depth in forming operations and shear tools compared with conventional mechanical systems.

Retraction height can be programmed as well.

    Central Lubrication System
Laser Brilliance is equipped with central lubrication to automate this part of the preventive maintenance process thus reducing the time required for weekly PM’s.

    Brush Tables
Brush tables are standard on all FINN-POWER turret punch presses and provide for better material support during punching, noise reduction and minimize the risk of surface scratches

Brush tables reduce noise, surface scratches and better material support

    Control
The powerful Siemens 840D CNC control with a 14” touch screen is the standard control with this series of FINN-POWER machines.   The Siemens 840D comes standard with 1.5 mb program memory and easy integration to your computer network.

“PCS” Programmable Clamp Setting and Four Sheet Clamps
"PCS" is a FINN-POWER patented feature that provides automatic positioning of the work clamp according to the NC program.

Programmable clamp setting allows 100% material utilization

With the four sheet clamps, PCS enables a clamp to be moved during the program.  This feature eliminates dead zones and allows 100% of the material to be utilized.

    Conveyor System for Slug Removal
FINN-POWER offers our SC/1 through the frame conveyor that brings the slugs from beneath the punching position to the end of the turret at approximately 14" above the finished floor.

SC/1 flat slug conveyor exits from underneath machine and then proceeds into lifting SC/2 conveyor

Our SC/2 is a unit that will lift the slugs from the SC/1 up to a 55 gallon drum height or other scrap bin.

    Vacuum System with Conveyor SC1V
For removal of punching scrap in light material applications, the optional vacuum system supports proprer slug retraction.

    Tool Lubrication System "ATL"
The tool lubrication system is an option that sprays an air-fluid mixture through the ram and spring housing onto sliding surfaces of the spring housing., keeping the guide assemblies well lubricated during operation.

    Remote System Monitoring
The optional remote system monitoring connects the CNC control directly to the Finn-Power customer support organization.  This enables fast recovery from machine error or any other operational problems thus guaranteeing best possible machine up-time.  In addition, several reports on the machine operation can be generated for the customer and sent periodically to allow accurate management of the system.

The Laser Brilliance achieves the following benefits:

High Pressure Cutting with a TRIAGONR 3300 Watt CO2 Laser with 375 psi (25 bar) assist gas pressure.  Higher pressures allow for cutting materials such as stainless steel and aluminum material with optimum speed and edge quality.

High pressure cutting with TRIAGONR laser

The“oil free” design of the pumps and turbines eliminates expensive and time consuming repairs.

There are only two external mirrors

Excellent energy consumption is realized by the laser in comparison with RF excited lasers.

The process capacity of the LB is 6mm (.236") cold rolled steel, 6mm (.236") aluminum, and 6mm (.236") of stainless steel.

The focal length lens can be changed in seconds using a cartridge technique. No tools are required.  The lens cartridges provided include 5” and 7.5” lens cartridge.  In the case of a focal lens change with a different focal distance, the cutting head does not need to be changed.  Only the cartridge needs to be changed thus reducing the set up time to a very minimum.

    Quick changing of lens cartridge

The High Pressure Autofocus cutting head is protected by a metal frame around. Brass brushes are used to assure the material is held down for the best protection of the cutting head and from scattered radiation.

Maximum protection of cutting head with metal cover and brass brushes

An externally located exhaust and dust filtration unit with built in filter cleaner and a separate dual circuit laser water chiller tailored to the system are included in the system package.  In addition it adds to the user friendliness of the laser system.

Laser water chiller guarantees optics stability

    TRIAGONR LASER
The TRIAGONR design extends the most compact and best economy design available.  From the resonator the beam is transferred  via 2 external, directly cooled copper mirrors onto the focusing lens.

Ease of programming is offered with the Siemens 840D CNC control which has a very operator friendly large touch screen system. A data base for storing a practically unlimited amount of combinations of laser parameters for various material types is integrated into the system.  During the creation of the program the operator simply selects material type and sheet thickness.  The system then automatically determines the needed parameter for proper part processing.

The FINN-POWER Laser Brilliance includes the Laser Cutting Wizard software making the operators job very easy cutting new materials.  This software combines a tutorial and diagnostic section and displays them graphically.  The tutorial section describes how to adjust the final cutting result by changing the laser cutting parameters.  The diagnostic section tells you what cutting parameter is recommended to change to optimize the final cut quality.  The software also provides pictures of good and poor quality cuts in different material thicknesses and types to compare your actual pieces to and make adjustments as needed.

    Laser parameter screen

Finished parts removal is achieved through a trap door 11.82” x 15.76” onto the machine area.  A second trap door is available if the laser stacking option is not chosen. This chute has a size of 31.4” x 31.4”.

Parts may also be transferred to an unloading/sorting & stacking system, depending upon the options selected.
